Geography and history

The Kunene Province is situated in the north western parts of Namibia. It has a total population of approximately 89 000 inhabitants and is also known as Kaokoland. The Himba ethnic group are the local inhabitants of this province and the name of the province is derived from the Kunene River. This province’s capital is Opuwo and it borders Angola and five other provinces of the country – Omusati, Oshana, Oshikoto, Otjozondjupa and Erongo.

The capital town of Opuwo offers great outdoor activities with regards to water sports. It is conveniently located near the Kunene River where most visitors like to fish. Tourists who would like to visit the very popular and well-known Etosha National Park can do so by using the town of Outjo as a gateway. This town also offers many historical buildings and sites.
