Outjo

Geography and history

Outjo is a small city situated in the Kunene Province of Namibia. It is located in the Northern parts of the country and has a total population of approximately 7 000 residents. The name Outjo means “small hills” and is derived from the surrounding topography. This city is well-known because it serves as the gateway to the Etosha National Park.

The city was founded in 1897 by Germans and originally served as their military base. Outjo is located near the Gamkarab Caves known for its many formations, but the caves are unfortunately not open to the public.
